A whole leaf Chinese black tea smoked over pine fires to create an extremely smoky and deeply flavorful tea.
Easily the most divisive tea among our offerings, this tea seems to collect only dedicated fans or bitter enemies. Due mostly in part to its heavy smoke flavor and the total oddity of smoke flavor in a beverage.
As heavy tea drinkers, we find this tea very enjoyable on a cold morning brewed hot without additives.
The story goes that the tea was created during the Qing Dynasty when the passage of armies delayed the annual drying of the tea leaves in the Wuyi Mountain. Eager to satisfy demand, tea producers sped up the drying process by getting their workers to dry the leaves over fires made from local pines.
According to some sources, Lapsang souchong is the first black tea in history. It is also said, but disputed, that Winston Churchill was a fan of Lapsang. Drinking it because some of the flavor profile reminded him of the same notes found in fine cigars.
Each tin is ½ cup volume giving you .75 to 1.5 ounces of tea depending on tea leaf density. This gives you approx 16-18 servings of each tea, or plenty enough servings to discover what you love.
